Disease outbreaks remain the single greatest threat to poultry operations worldwide. Learn the essential biosecurity measures that protect your flock and your investment.

Disease outbreaks remain the single greatest threat to poultry operations worldwide. A single incursion of Newcastle Disease, Avian Influenza, or Infectious Bursal Disease (IBD) can devastate an entire flock within days, causing enormous financial and production losses.

Biosecurity is not a single action , it is a comprehensive, systematic approach to preventing pathogens from entering or spreading within your operation.

The Three Pillars of Poultry Biosecurity

1. Isolation

All birds entering the farm must be quarantined for a minimum of 21 days before mixing with the existing flock. This prevents the introduction of latent infections that may not yet show clinical signs.

2. Traffic Control

Restrict access to the farm to essential personnel only. Maintain a visitor log, require foot dips and protective clothing at every entry point, and never allow people who have visited other poultry operations in the past 48 hours to enter your facilities.

3. Sanitation

Regular, thorough cleaning and disinfection of houses between flocks is non-negotiable. Use a rotation of disinfectant products , including quaternary ammonium compounds, oxidizing agents, and aldehydes , to avoid resistance build-up.

Vaccination Programs

A well-designed vaccination program is your second line of defense after biosecurity. Work with your veterinarian to develop a schedule appropriate for your region's disease pressure. Common vaccines for Pakistani poultry farms include:

  • Newcastle Disease (ND)
  • Infectious Bronchitis (IB)
  • Infectious Bursal Disease (IBD / Gumboro)
  • Avian Influenza (H9 subtype)
  • Marek's Disease

Record Keeping

Maintain detailed health records for every flock: daily mortality, feed and water intake, body weights, and any clinical observations. Early anomaly detection through good records saves lives and money.
